Tourism and Events Information for Victoria’s tourism industry

Tourism business basics

Congratulations! You've decided that you are ready to join Victoria’s nation-leading tourism industry.

Get started with learning the key to success, the relevant licences, permits, insurances and accreditation that your tourism business may need.

When starting any business, two actions you should take in the first instance are:

Licences, registrations and permits

To find out which licences, registrations and permits you need to start, run and grow your business, use the Australian Business Licence Information Service (ABLIS).

ABLIS will create a report of the relevant licences your business will require, as well as provide you with the associated application forms and details of the authorities you'll need to contact.

Insurance

To find out what insurances you need for your business visit the Business Victoria website.

An insurance policy that's appropriate to your business needs can be vital for the survival of your business.

Different policies can protect you against a range of unforeseen events, such as fire, theft of equipment or storm damage.

Accreditation

Accreditation is a set of industry standards established by tourism associations. It's a vital tourism industry asset designed to establish and continually improve industry standards for conducting a tourism business.

It achieves this by developing professional management systems that produce reliability, consistency and predictability in business operations, resulting in improved customer service and overall customer satisfaction.

Planning for growth

Once you have established your tourism business, you'll need to plan for growth if your business is to thrive in the future.

There are resources available to support Victorian tourism operators that you can find on our Marketing your tourism business page.

Business Victoria also runs workshops and events throughout the year. Attend one or all these workshops and events to receive expert advice on your business.
