Five Oaks Estate – producing wines of finesse

vineyard

The Yarra Valley, a one hour drive from Melbourne, is home to Victoria’s earliest vineyards and recognised as one of the world’s great wine growing regions. Boutique vineyard Five Oaks Estate upholds this reputation by producing wines harmoniously balanced with depth and complexity of flavour.

Named after the five magnificent oak trees that grace the property, Five Oaks is a family-run vineyard and winery which produces elegant handcrafted premium wines. Planted on deep, rich red volcanic soils, the vineyard has an intimate cellar door which is perfect for a private tasting with Five Oaks winemaker, Wally Zuk.

Wally has a PhD in nuclear physics and came to Australia from Canada in 1986 to study at Australian National University in Canberra, where a colleague first spiked Wally’s interest in wine. Whilst directing the Environmental Science Research Division at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation at Lucas Heights in Sydney, Wally and his wife Judy (who has a background in law) were on the look out for a place to set up their own vineyard. They soon discovered the Yarra Valley and by 1999 both Wally and Judy had given away their jobs to focus on the vineyard, which has flourished every since.

As a special treat for serious wine-lovers, Wally can present a vertical tasting of some of Five Oaks older vintages, including 2005 Five Oaks SGS cabernet - the successor to the 2000 cabernet sauvignon, which was awarded a gold medal at the 2002 London International Wine and Spirit Competition in London.

Five Oaks Estate also offer Private Tours. Guests are greeted on arrival by Wally and Judy and taken on a private tour of the vineyard and winery which includes a walk through the 30 year old Cabernet, Merlot and Riesling vines.
