Bendigo Art Gallery exclusive Australian venue for major international haute couture exhibition

The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947 – 1957

Bendigo Art Gallery has been confirmed as the exclusive Australian venue for The Golden Age of Couture: Paris and London 1947 – 1957 (7 December 2008 – 22 March 2009), the largest exhibition of haute couture to come to Australia.

Developed by the Victoria & Albert Museum, the exhibition will feature more than 250 pieces from some of the greatest international designers including works from Christian Dior, Cristóbal Balenciaga, Hubert de Givenchy and Pierre Balmain. 

It will be the largest exhibition ever staged at Bendigo Art Gallery.

The Golden Age of Couture marks a momentous decade in fashion history, beginning at the launch of Christian Dior’s’ New Look’ in 1947 and ending in 1957, the period described by Dior as the ‘golden age’. It was a time that set a new standard for creative design and impeccable workmanship that has rarely been surpassed since.  

Included among the stunning exhibition will be 100 complete haute couture dresses and evening gowns, selections of finely crafted textiles made by specialist artisans, original design books, illustrations, accessories and fashion photography from such world class photographers as Cecil Beaton and Richard Avedon.
