Melbourne’s justice hub brought back to life

Gippsland Art Gallery

Step back in time to the days when the Old Melbourne Gaol, the Old Magistrates’ Court and the City Watch House were in full force with the Old Melbourne Gaol: Crime and Justice Experience, a new tourism and educational attraction for Melbourne.

This historic precinct is the site of some of Victoria’s most infamous legal battles, which visitors can learn about on the tour.

While the old Melbourne Gaol, where Ned Kelly was hanged, has been a tourist destination for many years, this project has brought to life the historic Old Magistrates’ Court as well as the City Watch House, where the infamous Mark ‘Chopper’ Read and Squizzy Taylor were locked up.

The precinct includes a high-tech, multimedia fit-out of courtroom one of the Old Magistrates’ Court  to educate visitors about contemporary and historic approaches to justice, providing them the opportunity to take part in mock trials based on real cases, and play the role of judge, defendant, prosecutor or court clerk.

Guided tours of the City Watch House, which include the interactive experience of being locked up in the cells, are also available to people with a ticket to the Old Melbourne Gaol.

The Old Melbourne Gaol – Crime and Justice Experience is located in Russell St (between Victoria and La Trobe Streets) and is open daily from 9.30am  - 5pm (excluding Christmas Day and Good Friday). The Admission prices are: Adults $15.50, children $9.50, Conc $12.50, Family $42.00.
