Walkabout the wineries in Rutherglen
Over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, head to the north-east of Victoria for the annual four-day Rutherglen Winery Walkabout festival.
For $20, wine lovers are given their 2007 official Winery Walkabout tasting glass and holder and are invited to spend up to three days among the 20 participating Rutherglen wineries, sampling the unique range of varietals on tasting at each winery. For an extra $5 participants can also purchase a 2007 passport which if stamped at each of the 20 wineries, can be exchanged for a bottle of 2007 Collector Series Rutherglen Muscat.
From sparkling shiraz and classic table wines to wicked ports and mellow muscats, Rutherglen Winery Walkabout is a great way to taste, compare, contrast and buy the magnificent wines from Rutherglen’s unique wineries.
Besides tasting delicious wine, the festival also features live music and local produce markets tutored wine tastings, great food and a series of unique breakfasts and dinners.
A Shuttle Bus which runs between most wineries is available each day ($20 per day). Bookings can be made by calling (02) 6033 6306.
Rutherglen is one of Australia’s oldest wine-growing districts and renowned for producing robust red wines that cellar well for many years and crisp, modern-style whites, but is best known for its superb fortified wines, especially muscats. It is known for hosting impressive events such as the Winery Walkabout in June, the 10-day Tastes of Rutherglen Gourmet Getaway in March and the Rutherglen Tour de Muscat cycling weekend in November.
