Gibson Steps reopen at Port Campbell National Park reopen

Access has been restored to Gibson Beach at the Port Campbell National Park with the reopening of the Gibson Steps.

The Gibson Steps were closed in March 2008 after an independent engineer's report found that erosion at the top of the cliff posed an unacceptable risk to the public.

Works to the cliff top above Gibson Steps commenced in late November and included installing drainage near the top of the steps to release naturally occurring ground water, and controlling erosion, loose soil and surface run-off at the top of the cliff.

In developing the best solution to re-open Gibson Steps, Parks Victoria worked closely with Aboriginal Affairs and local indigenous groups to ensure cultural heritage values at the site are protected.
