Brabham's Repco BT19 rolls out Melbourne's new National Sports Museum

National Sports Museum

The eagerly anticipated National Sports Museum, which is located at the iconic MCG, will open this month (on 13 March). The museum houses the country's greatest showcase of sporting memorabilia including Sir Jack Brabham's legendary racing car.

Celebrating the place of sport in Australian life, the museum will appeal to kids and adults alike, with a range of interactive multimedia displays and a vibrant education program. Highlights include: Ian Thorpe's full body swimsuit; Catherine Freeman's swift suit from the Sydney 2000 Olympics; the Malvern Star bicycle that Hubert Opperman rode in his record-breaking 24-hour cycling marathon in Sydney in 1940, the first Brownlow medal; and a collection of baggy green caps from Australia's cricketing history, including Don Bradman's ‘Invincibles' cap.

One of the star attractions is the Brabham Repco BT19 – the only car to have won a world championship bearing both its driver's and constructor's name. The car was driven and designed by Sir Jack Brabham when he won the World Formula One Drivers' and Constructor's Championships in 1966.

The BT19 is owned and proudly displayed by Repco, Australia's biggest trade and retail supplier of automotive parts.

The museum is located at Gate 3, MCG, Yarra Park, Jolimont, and is open daily from 10am – 5pm.

Prices: adult $15, concession $11, family (two adults, twp children) $45 and children $8 (four – 15 years old).
