New exhibitions: 50 years of Barbie, 100 years of Cocktail Shakers

Barbie

The Zeppelin, 1920s design, featured in Shaken Not Stirred: A Century of Cocktail Design

Celebrate pop-culture in Melbourne during the coming colder months at two of the city’s kookiest exhibitions. Forever Barbie is set to ignite visitors with reminiscent memories, while Shaken, Not stirred: A Century of Design in Cocktail Shakers is sure to elicit some old-school customs.

The largest collection of Barbies ever assembled in the southern hemisphere will coincide with Barbie’s 50th anniversary. Federation Square is fitting out a purpose built exhibition hall that will host more than 300 Barbies – a celebration of her past, present and future.

The Forever Barbie exhibition, on from 26 June until 12 July, will immerse visitors in every aspect of Barbie’s life and prove insight into the future of the world’s most loved fashion doll.

Some of the rarest, quirkiest and most exquisite dolls will be showcased alongside Barbie’s fabulous fashions, houses, cars, pets and the illustrious men in her life.

Flying especially out for the exhibition is ponytail #1, one of the very first Barbie’s every produced, valued at $US28,000. Visitors can also observe a series of workshops from Barbie’s personal fashion designer, Robert Best – a passionate man who will provide insight into the design process behind one of the world’s most famous dolls.

If you want something a little more grown-up – then Shaken, Not stirred: A Century of Design in Cocktail Shakers is an exhibition that is sure to make you thirsty.

Australia’s largest ever exhibition of vintage cocktail equipment goes on show from May 19 until June 24 at 1806 cocktail bar. 1806 is the current holder of the title Best Cocktail List in the World.

Designs range from functional and flamboyant to fabulous to futile. Styled into fire extinguishers, ladies’ legs (with removable shoe), clanging bell ringer (shaped and rung like a school bell) and roosters using such materials as sterling silver, spun aluminium and Bakelite, shakers have inspired shapes from serious to silly, attracting collectors all over the world.

New Phillip Island Penguin Hospital to be built

Penguin

Phillip Island is getting ready for the development of a new Penguin Hospital at Phillip Island Nature Park. The major project is assisted by the strong support of funding raised by the Penguin Foundation’s Adopt a Penguin program.

The hospital will be built in the next 12 months, aiming to enhance the protection and rehabilitation of native wildlife on Phillip Island. Such services will enable rehabilitation officers to treat twice the number of sick and injured seabirds, increasing the hospital’s treatment capacity to at least 1000 oil birds as part of the project.

The facility will provide training for emergency services and maritime incidents that impact Victorian’s sick and injured coastal-life.

Bogong High Plains Road officially opened

Bogong High Plain road

The recent upgrading of a 36 kilometre stretch of the Bogong High Plains Road from gravel to fully sealed road is anticipated to open up one of the most spectacular drives in Victoria to greater year-round tourism.

The $10 million upgrade, which reopened in late April, was made possible by a partnership between the Federal and State governments, local governments and the Alpine resort industry and is designed to encourage more visitors to the region and to showcase the national heritage listed Alpine National Park.

The sealing of the road involved forming and laying the road base as well as sealing along 36km of the Bogong High Plains Road between Falls Creek and the Omeo Highway. Rock for the road base came from the construction of the tunnel for the new Bogong Power Station.

The work was carefully managed to avoid disturbance of the environmentally and culturally sensitive areas of the Bogong High Plains and Alpine National Park.

The project was managed through a collaboration between the Alpine and East Gippsland Shires, Falls Creek Resort management and Lift Company and Parks Victoria.

New Lorne Gourmet Trail

Gormet cheeses

One of Australia’s favourite coastal tourism destinations is about to show its saucy side with the creation of the new Lorne Gourmet Trail.

Famous as an iconic location on the Great Ocean Road, Lorne is renowned for its clean beaches and amazing landscapes. What has been lesser known until now, is that the town and the surrounding hinterland also produce world class food and wine.

Offering the benefit of local knowledge, the Lorne Gourmet Trail is a great new way for tourists to discover the local produce and seasonal delights of the region while at the same time exploring the Great Ocean Road’s hinterland which includes the undulating countryside and lush rainforests of Bambra, Birregurra, Deans Marsh, Murroon, Winchelsea, Pennyroyal and surrounds.

The Lorne Gourmet Trail is outlined in a free brochure which provides maps, contact details and delicious descriptions of the tantalising treats awaiting Great Ocean Road hinterland travellers. There are 18 diverse ‘must-sample’ destinations and 12 accommodation options are highlighted in the brochure. They include: Birregurra Estate Olives, producers of sumptuous kalamata olives and extra virgin olive oil; Hasting Ostrich Farm (in Winchelsea), a world leader in ostrich farming, exporting ostriches and ostrich goods all over the world and the multi award-winning Pennyroyal Farm, renowned for its super comfortable, pet-friendly cottages. Other destinations featured include Blakes Estate Winery which specialise in ‘Burgundy style’ Pinot Noir, and Hare Krishna Valley, a 200-acre property containing a biodynamic farm selling seasonal produce direct to the public and self-contained cottages, which is also famous for its monthly Vegetarian Feasts.

Melbourne Dining and Nightlife – New Hotspots

Mediterranean cooking is the focus of our new hotspots this month with new Italian and Greek restaurants creating a buzz among food lovers this month.

+39 Pizzeria & Degustation, 362 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne (03) 9642 0440

+39 Pizzeria & Degustation interior

The name originated from Italy's international code, and the food specialises in pizza and other popular dishes influenced by the country's regions Abruzzo and Puglia - welcome to +39.

The newest artisan inspired Pizzeria to hit Melbourne's CBD for breakfast, lunch and dinner, +39 serves a degustation of regional Italian food put together by flamboyant chef Donato Cofano, who owned a popular restaurant, Centopoveri, in Florence for many years.

As the newest venture for founder Remo Nicolini of popular hot-spots, Carlton Espresso and Espressino, +39 offers its patrons a similar dining ambience of clean lines, white walls and polished concrete floors.

The modern take on the interior mirrors that of the fine cuisine. Traditional wood-styled boards loaded with selections of fresh and aged cheeses, cured meats and plump olives makes you feel like you are experiencing the traditional Italian trimmings wrapped up in a modern and delicious concept.

With Remo Nicolini's amazing background in Italian cuisine, it definitely benchmarks itself as a professional in pizza. Choose from fresh ingredients such as artichoke hearts, mushroom, leg ham and olives that seem to be destined to sit atop the warm, perfectly cooked base.
+39 provides its patrons with a compelling excuse to add on a few extra hours to your lunch break- to truly master the gourmet italiano experiece!

Tucked away just off Chapel Street -  Bond Street Café and Wine Bar offers high quality food and wine options.

Opened at the start of this year, Bond Street offers tapas style sharing, however, Marcucci recognises the importance of main courses too, catering for those who like to be satisfied. And satisfied they are. It has a delectable menu of mouth-watering dishes that seem to perfectly accompany the wine list.

It is not just its food that has everything going for it – the interior was commended at the 2009 Interior Design Awards.

Greek Grill, Beer Deluxe, Federation Square (03) 9650 3822

Opened last month, Greek Grill provides visitors with traditional and authentic Greek dishes served up in a relaxed setting.

Greek Grill provides diners with the opportunity to experience Greek food in the classic way. Experience recipes that have been unchanged for generations accompanied by a Greek beer or glass of wine.

Regional Dining and Nightlife – New and noteworthy hotspots

What’s better than a winery or brewery? A winery or brewery with its own bar, restaurant, gallery or B&B. At these hotspots in the Macedon Ranges, Great Ocean Road and Gippsland, drinking is just part of the offer and all have their own intriguing back-story to tell.

Holgate Brewhouse
79 High Street, Woodend, Ph: (03) 54272510

Bond

Celebrating its 10th  anniversary, the iconic Holgate Brewhouse in Woodend has built a reputation for its fine craft beers, which are not only available in many of the more distinctive bars and restaurants around Melbourne and is now being exported as faraway as Sweden.

Paul Holgate, originally from Darraweit Guim near Romsey, and wife Natasha Holgate started the business from their property in May 1999, and introduced their first beer later that year.  Then in 2002, the Holgates purchased the run-down Keatings Hotel, and renovated it completely to house their brewery, also adding restaurant, bar and B&B style accommodation with 10 rooms.

The Holgate Brewhouse has now become a key tourism drawcard for the region, as well as a popular local watering hole, and their beer range has expanded to include 10 different ales and lagers.

To mark the tenth anniversary, Holgate Brewery is releasing a special anniversary beer, a brown ale brewed with macadamia nuts, and will continue the celebration with several special events throughout the year.

Flying Horse Bar and Brewery
Princes Highway, Warrnambool, Ph: (03) 55622254

Glasses of Flying Horse beer

Although in business for less than a year new Warrnambool craft brewer, Flying Horse Bar and Brewery, have already won a major award for their flagship beer, Dirty Angel, at one of the international beer industry’s biggest award ceremonies.

Dirty Angel dark beer, a deep mahogany colour ale with rich malt characters and hints of toffee, beat 38 breweries from around the world to win the Champion Porter award at the 2009 Australian International Beer Awards, which is considered to be the biggest showcase for premium beer and brewing excellence in the Asia Pacific region.

The brewery's Whale Ale and Mahogany Porter  - which like all the breweries other beers can only be purchased at the brewery - received silver awards in their respective fields

The Flying Horse Bar and Brewery opened in July 2008 by business partners Matthew Monk, Mathew Stewart and Graeme Roger the brewery opened on the site of the ‘Flying Horse Inn’, a caravan park and service station, and decided to keep the Flying Horse name as the locals had known the location this way for some 65 years.

Wild Dog Winery Restaurant
Warragul Korumburra Rd, Warragul, Ph: (03) 5623 2211

Wild Dog Winery

In what must go down as being a most unfortunate run of bad luck, the owners of the Wild Dog Winery Restaurant planned to open their new business to open February 7, 2009 – now known as the day of the Black Saturday bushfires.

With the near-by bushfires at Drouin and Nilma, the opening night which included a special performance of Shakespeare’s Mid-Summer Nights Dream was cancelled.

Although under ember attack, the Wild Dog premises were spared, and amazingly the restaurant opened the next day (Feb 8) and has been trading ever since. The rescheduled launch celebration will take place this month.

With seating for more than 100, its restaurant menu showcases Gippsland’s abundant local produce, a particular passion of head chef Ed McDowell. An extensive balcony area overlooking the vineyard is the perfect spot on a sunny afternoon for a Gippsland cheese platter with a glass of Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine.

The building also houses the new cellar door (open daily between 10am – 5pm) which features new wine dispensing technology and over 20 wines which are available to taste or to drink by the glass. There’s also a gallery space that showcases local art.

Ern Malley: The Hoax and Beyond, Heide Museum of Modern Art, 22 July - 15 November
Through a range of artworks, original documents and publications Ern Malley: The Hoax and Beyond explores one Australia’s greatest literary hoax and its impact on Australian cultural history has resonated for more than sixty year. In October 1943 Sydney poets Harold Stewart and James McAuley composed sixteen modernist-style verses by the fictitious poet Ern Malley. They sent them to Max Harris, the co-editor with Heide founder John Reed of the radical cultural journal Angry Penguins, the aim was being to ridicule the perceived modernist pretensions of Angry Penguins, its editors and contributors. Harris and Reed fell for the ruse. Impressed with Malley’s talent, they devoted an entire issue of Angry Penguins to the poems, which Stewart and McAuley then exposed as a hoax. Within days the story was a sensation in the local press, and was soon international news,.
