Bogong High Plains Road officially opened

Bogong High Plain road

The recent upgrading of a 36 kilometre stretch of the Bogong High Plains Road from gravel to fully sealed road is anticipated to open up one of the most spectacular drives in Victoria to greater year-round tourism.

The $10 million upgrade, which reopened in late April, was made possible by a partnership between the Federal and State governments, local governments and the Alpine resort industry and is designed to encourage more visitors to the region and to showcase the national heritage listed Alpine National Park.

The sealing of the road involved forming and laying the road base as well as sealing along 36km of the Bogong High Plains Road between Falls Creek and the Omeo Highway. Rock for the road base came from the construction of the tunnel for the new Bogong Power Station.

The work was carefully managed to avoid disturbance of the environmentally and culturally sensitive areas of the Bogong High Plains and Alpine National Park.

The project was managed through a collaboration between the Alpine and East Gippsland Shires, Falls Creek Resort management and Lift Company and Parks Victoria.
