Grand Hyatt Melbourne's magnificent makeover
This month, Grand Hyatt Melbourne, located at the top end of Collins Street, will begin a $40 million renovation which will include an extensive revamp of the hotel's façade, lobbies, café, bar and retail precinct.
The hotel's upper and lower lobbies and Russell Street and Collins Street entrances, Plane Tree Café and Bar Deco will be totally redesigned and an exclusive two-storey retail area boasting luxury brands and a new events venue called the Residence will be added.
The redevelopment of the site will restore life to one of the city's intimate laneways, Beaney Lane. In contrast, a modern internal laneway will link the hotel's lobby with the Collins Street foyer and retail tenancies.
The Residence will be a spectacular event venue, combining an impressive collection of individually-styled rooms including a dramatic kitchen that opens onto a terrace over-looking Collins Street and a garden courtyard. The yet-to-be-renamed Plane Tree Café will undergo a radical refurbishment that will turn the well-loved restaurant into a contemporary dining establishment with an all day bar and bistro, a private dining room as well as a relaxing lounge area.
In contrast to Plane Tree Café's fresh light palette of neutral tones, Bar Deco will be moody, dark and dramatic, providing a club-like atmosphere complete with fireplaces, a wine room and courtyard.
It is anticipated that the hotel's new restaurant and bar will open in June 2008 and that the Residence will be unveiled in September 2008. The entire redevelopment of the hotel will be completed by October 2008 in time to host the hotel's Spring Carnival special events and celebrations.
