The Phantom of the Opera is returning to Melbourne from 19 July at the Princess Theatre, with Anthony Warlow reclaiming the role which thrilled audiences when it first premiered here in 1990.
Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece has been seen by more than 80 million people and has won more than 50 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards.The longest running musical on Broadway, Phantom has played in 25 countries and 124 cities around the world and recently celebrated its 20th birthday in London's West End. The show last ran in Australia between 1990 and 1998, selling more than 1.5 million tickets in Melbourne alone.
Anthony Warlow has been widely acclaimed for his defining role as the Phantom.
“To have Anthony back in Melbourne reclaiming the role he made his own will be one of theatre's magic events,” said producer John Frost of the Gordon/Frost Organisation. Joining Anthony Warlow on the Princess Theatre stage will be Ana Marina.
With spectacular sets and more than 230 costumes by international designer, the late Maria Björnson, The Phantom of the Opera contains some of Andrew Lloyd Webber's most famous music, including “The Phantom of the Opera” and “Music of the Night”.
