Luxury in the Wilderness
Immerse yourself in nature without sacrificing creature comforts at Parks Victoria's wonderful new Wilderness Retreats. Stay in unique and contemporary safari-style tents that are high on comfort but low on environmental impact at two stunning East Gippsland locations - Buchan Caves and Cape Conran Coastal Park.
The luxury tents are said to “touch the earth lightly” as they sit on innovative modular galvanised steel frames which do not require concrete footings. The retreats are completely weatherproof and include a covered hardwood timber deck, quality furniture and a lockable canvas door.
Native animals such as Eastern Grey Kangaroos, bandicoots, wombats and potaroos are common sights around the retreats and many great nature walks are easily accessible. From Buchan Caves explore the stalactites and stalagmites of Fairy Cave and Royal Cave; or go swimming, surfing or snorkelling at the beaches of Cape Conran.
Although both Wilderness Retreats are located in existing Parks Victoria campgrounds, the tents are tucked away in secluded and private areas, creating a sense of exclusivity. The tents contain a queen size bed, two bedside tables, table and chairs, a single futon chair/bed, a single rollout bed and a small fridge.
A well-equipped communal kitchen for exclusive use of Wilderness Retreat guests includes stainless steel bench tops, a hotplate, fridge, microwave, toaster and tea and coffee-making facilities. Continental breakfast can be organised on request.
All linen and towels are provided, as is crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils. Communal toilet and shower facilities are also close by.
The Buchan Caves retreats opened in December 2006 and Cape Conran is due to open in March 2007. Both spots are easy stops on the Sydney to Melbourne Coastal Drive.
