Three blockbuster exhibitions soon to open at Melbourne’s major museums
Now has never been a better time to visit the museum with three blockbuster exhibitions opening in Melbourne the next three months, including two Australian exclusives.
Dinosaur Walk
This month Melbourne Museum will launch Dinosaur Walk, a new permanent exhibition where visitors will be able to walk among, around and even above the Museum’s collection of dinosaur skeletons. Exclusive to Melbourne, the exhibition will also feature megafauna and Quetzalcoatlus, the largest flying animal of all time. Dinosaur fans will also be able to learn about how dinosaurs moved, what they ate and how they survived. Opening on April 3, the exhibition will also feature skeletons of Ice Age megafauna such as Diprotodon (the world’s largest marsupial) and Megalania (the world’s largest lizard) and specially created animations where visitors can see the animals come to life.
A Day in Pompeii
The drama and tragedy of ancient Pompeii will be showcased in the A Day in Pompeii, on display at Melbourne Museum from 26 June to 25 October 2009.
One of the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series for 2009, A Day in Pompeii is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Roman treasures from almost 2000 years ago.
A Day in Pompeii tells the story of daily life in the ancient city – from food and dining, commerce and business, medicine, religious beliefs, burial practices, to private residences and gardens, and luxury and beauty. Exclusive to Melbourne, the exhibition has been developed by Museum Victoria in partnership with the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Napoli e Pompei (SAP), and will feature over 250 objects from daily life in Pompeii and surrounds, as well as a number of body casts.
STAR WARS
One of the most loved film franchises of all time will be revisited in the blockbuster exhibition STAR WARS: Where Science Meets Imagination*, which explores the science and fantasy behind the STAR WARS phenomenon, opening at Scienceworks in June. Developed by the Museum of Science, Boston, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd, STAR WARS is the first exhibition to showcase costumes and props from all six STAR WARS movies while exploring cutting-edge research and modern technologies that could one day make the fantasy world of STAR WARS a reality.
STAR WARS: Where Science Meets Imagination runs from 4 June – 3 November, 2009 at Scienceworks.
* STAR WARS: Where Science Meets Imagination, presented by Bose Corporation, was developed by the Museum of Science, Boston and Lucasfilm Ltd. The exhibition is based upon work supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation, USA. © 2009 Lucasfilm Ltd. & TM. All rights reserved. Presented by Bose Corporation.
