The Victoria Hotel’s multi-million dollar makeover
One of Melbourne’s most treasured heritage hotels, The Victoria Hotel, in Little Collins Street, will open brand new rooms this month as part of an $8 million makeover designed to bring the 19th century hotel into the 21st century.
While retaining its heritage feel, the renovations will bring a contemporary new look to the hotel. The hotel’s existing 90 economy rooms in its South Wing have been replaced by 57 larger, modern rooms with ensuites, internet access, plasma TV screens, ducted airconditioning and completely new furnishings throughout.
The first stage of the renovation involved the addition of a rooftop gym, swimming pool, sauna and spa complex offering guests views of the city while they work out.
All Heritage rooms have been repainted with new lighting and soft furnishings, while 90 of the rooms also have fully renovated bathrooms.
The Victoria Hotel was established in 1880 by a former Premier of Victoria, James Munro. At one stage, "The Vic", as it became known, was advertised as the largest hotel in the Commonwealth - today it remains the largest three star hotel in Australia. It has been part of the Accor network since 2003.
The Hotel is offering a special Home Away From Home Package which includes overnight accommodation in a Heritage Double or Twin Room, full buffet breakfast in Alice's Restaurant, a copy of the book Home Away from Home (soft back), two hotel mugs including hot chocolate packet, and a packet of delicious biscuits. The package is available for the first 500 bookings and is available from 13 April (although it can be booked in advance). The package is priced at $125 for two people.
